Participant Media wanted a logo for a reality show featuring Kobe Bryant. The show followed him as he met with homeless people and the inhabitants of a Downtown Los Angeles Mission. These shelters provide a refuge and pathway to recovery from addiction and abuse for homeless people. Often they are set-up by the church and have a religious dimension. I wanted to consider the purpose of the Mission in the title treatment, to make that evident in a visual form.
I felt that I should look at some typographic solutions and see if there might be a way to create a dignified identity that could allude to the subject matter in a direct way. I was inspired by the doorway of the LA Mission, which had a wrought iron sign. I looked at creating something along these lines. Ultimately, I felt that there might be a more typographic solution and realized that I could add an open door motif using the “i” of mission.
