For the exhibition, “Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion”, I edited a short film which was made in conjunction with the London College of Fashion. Balanciaga was a fashion designer who worked from the 1950’s to 1970’s and created clothing with unusual shapes and a seemingly simple silhouette. The students deconstructed a number of his signature garments in order to work out how they were constructed and the intricacy of his craft. The film shows the techniques employed in the creation of the patterns used to make the clothing. As a technical skill, the pattern-cutting process needed to be conveyed in a way that fashionistas and lay-people could understand. I was given the raw footage to shape into a short documentary that reveals the master designer’s secrets.
